In this video, “Survival Training within Historical
Ninjutsu”, I discuss a specific “jutsu” within the training of Tomo-ryu
Shinobijutsu called seizonjutsu. This is
a specific aspect of training within Tomo-ryu, which is much different than
that of other more popular ninjutsu ryuha such as Togakure-ryu Ninpo Taijutsu.
.
Schools such as the Bujinkan, Genbukan, Jinenkan, etc have
never formally had “survival training”, in their curriculum. There has never been a time that you see
Masaaki Hatsumi or any other “Togakure-ryu” practitioner in Japan teach:
primitive fire making, how to disinfect water while living off of the land, how
to build shelters, tracking and survival skills. Ever… They teach taijutsu, kobujutsu, etc. That is not me being disrespectful towards
them at all. That is me stating a fact.
.
I could say the same thing towards other martial arts such
as: Taekwondo, Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Aikido. They do not teach
survival skills either as part of their martial art curriculum. Again, that is not me being mean or
hateful. It is me stating a fact.
.
In 2010, I started making seizonjutsu lessons and posts more
available in the public and in 2011, I wrote a book (Shinobi no Michi; The Way
of the Ninja) detailing the importance of seizonjutsu and its importance within
historical ninjutsu training. Then out of no where, all of these people that
were trashing me, from these other organizations started teaching “Seizonjutsu”. Some of them are even from some of the organizations
that I stated above.
.
In the Budo Ryu Kai, we have 7 warrior traditions and the
Togakure-ryu is one of them. There is no
“Seizonjutsu” in Togakure-ryu. I teach Togakure-ryu. Like I stated above; There are no videos or books
of Masaaki Hatsumi rubbing sticks to create primitive fire. Just look at the
Togakure-ryu densho. There is nothing at all written about primitive survival
training. However, there are many things that are specific to the Togakure-ryu,
that are not found in any other ninjutsu ryuha as well. But this post is not about Togakure-ryu, it
is about Seizonjutu, which is a specific skill within Tomo-ryu. So anyone who
is teaching Togakure-ryu and is adding “Seizonjutsu” to their curriculum got it
from watching and reading my materials…
.
I will say there is a “grey area” with survival training
within Togakure-ryu. As a teacher of the Togakure-ryu, I help many other
teachers of this particular ryuha and they ask me many questions. The reason
that “Seizonjutsu” is NOT within the Togakure-ryu is because they have a set of
teachings called the TenChiJin and the individual skills, such as use of water
(suiton) use of fire (katon) and so on are found in the TenChiJin. So if you are a Togakure-ryu instructor. Your survival teachings (if you are sticking
to the densho) would be in the TenChiJin aspect of training. So if you teach
the Togakure-ryu, shouldn’t call it Seizonjutsu, you should be calling it what
is written in the densho, and that aspect of part of the TenChiJin.
.
This lesson is directly for the practitioners of the ancient
Japanese koryu martial arts of the ninja and samurai, such as ninjutsu (ninpo)
and bujutsu (budo).
